Smart Resources

Social Bookmarking with Delicious:

Picture_8.png
bookmarking on the web

Try del.icio.us to organize your bookmarks so that you, colleagues, and students and friends can easily access them

http://del.icio.us

With Del.icio.us (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0) you can tag and organize your favorite websites, accessing them from any computer; students can also access tagged websites that you have screened.
  • go to www.delicious.com
  • register for an account
  • Firefox, Safari or Flock: drag both of the icons to your bookmarks tool bar so that you can quickly tag websites and access your Del.icio.us account. IE: install buttons
  • you are now ready to start finding and "tagging" your favorites - a tag is a descriptor/category that will allow you to group your sites (sort of like a folder)
  • when you find a site you like, just press the "tag" button in the bookmark tool bar; this will open up a window that will allow you to save this website under as many tags/categories as you'd like (do not use spaces to name your tags; use underscore between words or combinations of lower and uppercase letters)
  • don't worry if, in a few days or weeks, you want to rename a tag; click settings, then under TAGS, select rename "tag tags;" Unwanted tags can also be deleted
  • click settings to change your password, e-mail account, rename or delete tags, integrate Del.icio.us with your facebook account, etc.
  • when you are ready, you will also be able to "bundle" your tags - you will find this option under settings as well as add your tag-roll to your website using the provided HTML.

If you are happy and comfortable with del.icio.us, try DIIGO! www.diigo.com

WSD e-toolbox wiki: http://etoolbox.wikispaces.com/

gmail:

Using gmail so that students can register for sites (such as youtube) that require e-mail confirmation:
  • create a dummy gmail account for your self such as mrsteacher@gmail.com
  • For those students who do not have their own e-mail address, devise a protocol such as mrsteacher+studentfirstname@gmail.com and add each of your students
  • when students register at the site, they will use the e-mail account from gmail that you created and you can confirm each. (Note: does not work with Google Docs)
